Meet Sister Judy Lund
5th and 6th grade Religion
5th grade Science
Sr. Judy has been teaching at St. Matthew’s since 1992. She has taught for 56 years (!) including elementary grades in Chicago and Rockford, Illinois Catholic schools, at Catholic high schools in Illinois, Wisconsin, South Dakota and Texas, and has also served as High School Principal in Bloomington, Illinois. In addition, she has taught adult education in Illinois and Wisconsin, was a Provincial Counselor for 14 states and Bolivia, and a Third Age and Retirement Counselor. She holds a BA from Portland University, an MA from Colorado State University and has completed a conglomeration of post grad courses.
In addition to her great love for children and teaching, outside of school life Sr. Judy enjoys tenting, hiking, being in nature, traveling and reading. She has a far-reaching family, including her Dominican Family, which is worldwide, as well as her local “family” at St. Matt’s – the staff, faculty, students and families of St. Matthew’s.
Sr. Judy’s favorite science activity is Roller Coasters, which is eagerly anticipated by all in-coming fifth graders, to create and build, in small groups, their own version of a roller coaster. It’s an activity that, “starts the new school year off most royally.” Her favorite saint is St. Teresa of Avila, “a most COMMON SENSE saint!” and her favorite Bible verse: ”See! I will not forget you…I have carved you on the palm of my hand (Isaiah 49:15).”
Her favorite time of day is early morning quiet time to reflect and pray, to enjoy her first cup of coffee and to watch the birds and squirrels in the trees outside her window. What she likes most about St. Matthew’s is the dedication and spirit of the families, staff, teachers, and Fr. Rod who all work together to make this school a very special place for all children.
Beloved by children, colleagues and families alike, Sr. Judy loves teaching because she can “share my own enthusiasm for learning, to help young people make connections – those ‘ahha!’ moments – in their faith, in their life, in nature and science. It is my passion.”
